Get in Shape Physically
Pioneer treks require physical stamina. This can be obtained through obedience to the Word of Wisdom, eating wholesome foods, not overeating, eating a balanced diet, and getting regular exercise. Physical preparation cannot be completed in a short period of time. The following are some general guidelines that you might consider:
- Walk or jog 4-5 times per week
- For 2-3 times per week, walk or jog 2-3 miles; for 2 times a week walk or jog 4-5 miles
- Walk uphill about 4 times, increasing the distance each time before the trek
- Play recreational sports regularly
- Participate in some type of aerobic exercise at least 3 times a week
- Eat wholesome foods and avoid junk food. Keep processed foods to a minimum. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits
- Make sure you take care of any medical problems before you go on trek
Get in Shape Spiritually
Pioneer treks require spiritual preparation. This means additional effort to bring their lives in tune with the Spirit. Here are some suggestions:
- Personal and family prayer each day. Listen to the Spirit then follow the promptings
- Regular study of the Book of Mormon and other scriptures
- As you ponder the scriptures, think of gospel principles one can learn from trek
- Seek to be temple worthy
- Strive to serve others and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ daily
Here is a specific list of things you can do:
- Make sure you pray daily, morning and night
- Have personal scripture study daily
- Attend your Sunday church meetings
- Regularly attend youth classes and activities
- Learn more about pioneers by reading books and stories about them
- Strive to strengthen your testimony
- Serve others daily
- Treat family members and friends with charity
